What to Bring
- Off! Deep Woods Bug/Tick spray
- Sunscreen
- Wide brim hat
- 2 Nalgene (or similar) Water Bottles, something you can carry on survey holding at least 2 liters
- Bedding (sleeping bag, pillow, etc.)
- Toiletries (Shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, etc.)
- Towels
- Flashlight/Lantern for nighttime
- Long Pants/Jeans
- Lightweight long sleeve shirts
- Bandanas
- Thick socks
- Work/Hiking boots (with ankle support, we will walk through cactus patches)
- Jacket
- Personal entertainment (books, frisbees, music, sketchpad, camera, spending money, games, etc.)
- Backpack
- Sunglasses
- Extra batteries
- Personal journal, pens, pencils
- Other clothes for after hours (e.g. swimsuit, camp shoes, etc.)
WHAT NOT TO BRING:
Anything that runs on plug in-electricity, you can bring your cell phone but charging will be intermittent because we have no electricity in camp. Directors can answer any questions before coming to the field.
BASIC INFORMATION TO REMEMBER:
- There is one bank on the island: US Bank and they have two ATM locations in Avalon.
- There are two grocery stores on the island both run by Vons.
- Your laundry can be done at a coin-operated laundry mat or you can pay to have them washed at the Catalina Island Laundry facility. However, this is your own responsibility.
- Verizon Wireless owns the majority of cell towers on the island and has the best coverage. Other carriers do work though. AT&T is the second best.
- Mail can be sent via the Pimu Catalina Island Archaeology Project at the Catalina Island Conservancy, P.O. Box 2739, Avalon, CA 90704. There may be some delay in picking up mail, so keep this in mind.
- Dr. Teeter will provide her cell phone number as an emergency contact number for loved ones. They can also contact the Conservancy office number: (310) 510-1445 to get a message to you.
- Please email Dr. Teeter your itinerary both travel and boat times and contact cell phone number as soon as possible. It’s important that we can reach you on the 18th and vice versa in case there are last minute changes.
- Download your readings and purchase your book before coming to the island. We do not have a photocopy machine or printer for you to use.
- There is a Radio Shack in Avalon that has internet access. Avalon also has a fee for wireless internet or is available free in the Avalon Library. Just remember to be considerate when looking for an outlet to plug your computer into.
- Hiking is an option during time off as well as lots of outdoor recreation activities like a zipline in Avalon, kayaking, camping, but please make sure that one of the staff or another student is always aware of where you are going and when you expect to return. There may be fees or permits involved. Look online for more details.
